The fitppl journey

Patrick started fitppl to create products that put better nutrition and low environmental footprint ahead of flashy marketing and the pollution created by plastic packaging. This didn't happen overnight. The fitppl concept was many years in the making.

2011: Foundation

"After living in Costa Rica during 2011 and eating a diet of wholesome, local foods, I grew to embrace this simplified lifestyle. Later, I would realize this time would plant a critical seed that would develop into the fitppl brand."

2012: Idea

"After returning from Costa Rica, I took a job at an Austin start-up. The initial idea for fitppl came to me in August 2012 while working here. It was difficult to to maintain a healthy lifestyle from the snack options provided. I asked the office manager to bring in a protein powder for the kitchen to make smoothies. They brought in a generic, dairy-based protein with flashy graphics and a laundry list of ingredients I didn't understand. I noticed others wanted to make healthy choices too, but wanted product transparency to balance out their busy lifestyles. An idea came to me in that kitchen to bring the honest simplicity of Costa Rica to my current lifestyle, and the busy lifestyle of others. To help people, stay fit people. From that simple idea, a passion project was born I named fitppl."

"I quit that job in March 2013 and pursued freelance film, a self taught skill from personal interest. This schedule allowed me to spend more time to traveling. fitppl was still just an idea at this point. The catalyst for launching the fitppl brand happened here, while swimming near Koh Hong Island. I witnessed firsthand the severe impact of plastic pollution in the ocean. It was floating everywhere and sparked my concern The more research I did about ocean pollution the more alarming the situation became. The catastrophic plastic waste in the oceans is hands down one of the biggest problems facing not only our species, but countless others. The origins of the ditch the plastic initiative was born from the experience."

"Now with a fresh focus to launch a company with an authentic purpose for people and planet, I got to work. I started to hone in on the first line of fitppl products. As an avid weightlifter, traveler, and reflecting back from my experience in 2012, I always relied on the convenience of protein blends, but was unsatisfied with the offerings claiming to be natural or clean because I was still having to google ingredients. I was determined to create balanced, transparent powders that didn't trigger a gag reflex due to the overwhelmingly artificial taste of most. Food and supplement companies were also some of the largest contributors to the plastic pollution issue, so I began incorporating the ditch the plastic initiative into the packaging. While developing the fitppl brand, I learned a lot about conventional animal farming methods and the enivronmental toll it caused, which just wasn't sustainable. So I decided to use plant-based ingredients. I began sourcing ingredients and testing the formulas every night in my kitchen."

I spent nights meticulously testing, tweaking, and tasting the final blends of our first product line. One of the biggest challenges was finding companies that would work with me. I was incredibly stubborn about not using plastic, and most wanted to stick to the status quo of wasteful plastic tubs and scoops. They also tried to sell me pre-made blends with questionable ingredients, which wasn't going to fly.  It was also important to keep all production and packaging close to Austin to reduce our transportation footprint. I didn't cut any corners and wouldn't budge about how I wanted things done. Finally in late 2015, after years of hard work, fitppl was launched with a mission to craft products that are better for people and better for the planet."

A small idea back in 2013 has turned into such a meaningful moment for me. So many companies were claiming to be eco-friendly, but were not actually doing anything about the issue besides greenwashing. I was really proud that fitppl was the first environmentally proactive company in the food and supplement space removing litter from our communities."

"fitppl started as a passion project. No paid celebrity endorsements. No marketing gimmicks. Just pure drive to a create a company that aligns with my beliefs and allows people to take control of what goes into their body and environment. I'm proud of what we create on the product front, and even prouder of what we're doing in our communities. As the company grows, so does the overall mission. It was a lot of work to get where we are, and there's a lot more work to be done. "
