What is a greens powder?
A greens powder is a blend of dried green plants, usually grasses, leafy plants and algae like spirulina and chlorella, that you mix into water or a smoothie. Many add fruit too, sold as "greens and reds." What's actually inside varies a lot from brand to brand, so the label tells you far more than the name does.

What can a greens powder do?
The clearest benefit is filling a gap. Only about 1 in 8 U.S. adults eats enough fruit, and only 1 in 10 eats enough vegetables.2
Research on mixed fruit and vegetable powders is limited but encouraging. A review of 22 studies found that taking them daily raised blood levels of beta-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E and folate, with no serious side effects reported.3 In a small 90-day study, people with high blood pressure who took a greens drink saw their blood pressure fall, while a control group's didn't change.4 These were small studies of specific products, so treat them as early evidence, not a promise.
A greens powder doesn't replace whole fruits and vegetables. Supplements can't take the place of the variety of foods a healthy diet needs.5 Think of it as a backup for the days you fall short.
What to look for in a greens powder
- Ingredients you recognize. Look for named grasses, greens, algae and fruits rather than vague "plant extracts."
- Disclosed amounts. Many greens powders list blends with a total weight. You can see what's in each blend, but not how much of each ingredient. Ours works this way too.
- Sweeteners and sugar. Check for added sugar, stevia, sucralose or sugar alcohols if you'd rather avoid them.
- Fiber. Check the grams per serving if fiber is part of why you're buying.
- Certifications and testing. Algae like spirulina can be contaminated with toxins from other algae, so quality control matters.6
How to use it
Mix one level scoop into 6 oz of cold water, juice or coconut water, or blend it into a smoothie. There's no magic hour to take it. Pick a time you'll stick with, like breakfast. For more, see the best time to drink greens and reds.
If you take a blood thinner like warfarin, talk to your doctor first. Greens can be high in vitamin K, which affects how warfarin works.7 The same goes if you're pregnant, nursing or taking other medications.
Questions, answered
Greens powder, ingredients and how to use it, explained.
What's the difference between a greens powder and a reds powder?
Greens powders are built around grasses, leafy plants and algae. Reds powders lean on fruits and berries. Daily Greens & Reds has both in one scoop: 5.2g of greens and 6g of fruit.1 For more, read greens vs. reds powder.
Is Daily Greens & Reds sweetened?
Lightly, with monk fruit extract. There's no stevia, no sucralose and no added sugar, and each scoop has less than 1g of sugar.1
Can a greens powder replace fruits and vegetables?
No. It can help on days you fall short, but it can't match the fiber, variety and volume of whole fruits and vegetables. Supplements can't take the place of a varied diet.5
Wheatgrass is on the label. Is it gluten-free?
Yes. Gluten is in the wheat grain, not the young grass. Daily Greens & Reds is certified gluten-free by GFCO, which allows no more than 10 ppm of gluten.
When should I take a greens powder?
Whenever you'll remember it. There's no evidence that one time of day works better than another. Many people take it with breakfast or in a smoothie. Read more in the best time to drink greens and reds.
Is a greens powder safe if I take a blood thinner?
Check with your doctor first. Greens can be high in vitamin K, which affects how warfarin works.7 It's also worth asking if you're pregnant, nursing or take other medications.
