What is monk fruit?
Monk fruit, also called luo han guo, is a small round fruit native to southern China. Its sweetness comes from compounds called mogrosides. To make monk fruit sweetener, the fruit is crushed and the sweet parts are extracted into a liquid or powder.1
Monk fruit extract is about 100 to 250 times sweeter than sugar, so a tiny amount goes a long way, and it's considered a no-calorie sweetener.1
Is monk fruit safe?
In the U.S., monk fruit extracts are generally recognized as safe. The FDA has reviewed several notices for monk fruit extracts and hasn't questioned their use, and it hasn't set an acceptable daily intake.2
Not every regulator agrees yet. In 2019, the European Food Safety Authority said it didn't have enough data to conclude on monk fruit extract's safety as a food additive and asked for longer-term studies.3 That's a call for more research, not a finding that it's harmful.
Monk fruit vs. stevia vs. erythritol
| Sweetener | What it is | In our proteins? |
|---|---|---|
| Monk fruit | Extract of the luo han guo fruit | Yes, the only sweetener |
| Stevia | Purified extract of the stevia leaf | No |
| Erythritol | A sugar alcohol | No |
| Sucralose | An artificial sweetener | No |

Watch for monk fruit blends
Because monk fruit is so sweet, many "monk fruit" sweeteners are blended with erythritol to bulk them up and make them taste more like sugar.1 A product that says "sweetened with monk fruit" on the front can still contain erythritol or stevia, so check the full ingredient list.

Monk fruit, how it compares and what to check on a label.
What is monk fruit sweetener?
An extract of monk fruit, or luo han guo, a small fruit native to southern China. Its sweet compounds, called mogrosides, make it about 100 to 250 times sweeter than sugar, with no calories.1

Does "sweetened with monk fruit" mean no erythritol?
Not always. Many monk fruit sweeteners are blended with erythritol,1 so check the ingredient list. Our proteins contain no erythritol.
