Is Orgain Protein Powder Healthy? An Honest Review
What's in Orgain Organic Protein, what independent testing found, and who it's a good fit for.
Orgain is one of the best-selling plant protein powders in the U.S., and it's easy to see why: it's organic, it's widely available, and it costs less per serving than most of its competitors. But is Orgain protein powder actually healthy?
We looked at the label, the ingredient list and independent heavy metal testing for Orgain Organic Protein Plant Based Powder in Vanilla Bean, its flagship product. We make a competing protein, fitppl Optimal Plant Protein, so keep that in mind. To keep it fair, every number below comes from a label or an independent lab, and we've included where Orgain comes out ahead of us.
The short answer
- It's a solid, affordable organic protein. Each serving has 21g of plant protein, 150 calories, 0g of sugar and 5g of fiber, for about $1.90.12
- The trade-off is a long ingredient list. Beyond the protein, there's a creamer base, three gums, natural flavors, and a sweetener blend of erythritol and stevia.1
- Its lead result was relatively low for a plant protein. Consumer Reports found 0.70 mcg of lead per serving, well under the USP <2232> daily limit of 5 mcg, lower than many plant powders it tested, and lower than our own latest result.46
- Whether it's right for you mostly comes down to how you feel about erythritol, stevia and gums.

Serving size and nutrition are from the label; the serving is two scoops.14 The ingredient list includes an organic protein blend (pea protein, brown rice protein and chia seed), an organic "creamer base" (acacia gum, high oleic sunflower oil, inulin, rice dextrins, rice bran extract and rosemary extract), organic erythritol, natural flavors, sea salt, organic acacia gum, organic guar gum, organic stevia and xanthan gum.1
What Orgain does well
- Price. At about $1.90 a serving, it's one of the least expensive organic plant proteins you can buy.2
- Organic certification. It's USDA Organic, which covers how the ingredients are grown.
- Fiber. 5g of fiber per serving is more than most protein powders, with inulin and chia in the mix.
- No sugar. The label lists 0g of sugar.
- Easy to find. It's in most grocery stores and big-box retailers.
The trade-offs
- A long ingredient list. Counting each item in its blends, Orgain has 17 ingredients. The creamer base and gums make it smoother and thicker, which many people like. If you want a short label, it's not the one.
- Erythritol and stevia. Both are sweeteners some people avoid, whether for taste, digestion or because of newer research questions. We explain both in our guides to erythritol and stevia in protein powder.
- Less protein per scoop. 21g takes two scoops. That's fine for most people, but it's less protein per gram of powder than some alternatives.
- Natural flavors. "Natural flavors" can cover many different ingredients, and the label doesn't say which.
Does Orgain protein powder have lead?
Like nearly every plant protein, yes, a small amount. In October 2025, Consumer Reports tested 23 protein powders and shakes and found plant-based products had the most lead on average.3 To put the numbers in context, we compare them with USP <2232>. USP <2232> is the U.S. Pharmacopeia's standard for heavy metals in dietary supplements. It sets daily limits of 5 mcg of lead, 5 mcg of cadmium, 15 mcg of inorganic arsenic and 15 mcg of mercury. Following it is voluntary, but it's a common benchmark for testing supplements.6 Here's how Orgain compared with our own latest result:
| Per serving | Lead | Cadmium | Arsenic | Mercury | Tested by |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Orgain Organic Protein, Vanilla Bean (46g) | 0.70 mcg | 1.03 mcg | 0.80 mcg | Not detected | Consumer Reports, 20254 |
| fitppl Optimal Plant Protein, Vanilla (36g) | 1.01 mcg | 3.35 mcg | Not detected | 0.25 mcg | Light Labs, Sept 20265 |
| USP <2232> daily limit | 5 mcg | 5 mcg | 15 mcg | 15 mcg | U.S. Pharmacopeia6 |
Both were under the USP limits. In these tests, Orgain had less lead and cadmium than Optimal, and Optimal had no detectable arsenic. Keep in mind these results come from different labs, batches and years, and metals vary from batch to batch because plants take them up from the soil. Consumer Reports' results averaged two or three lots bought in late 2024 and early 2025.4 We publish our full results on the Optimal product page and retest about every six months.

Who should choose Orgain, and who might not
Orgain is a good fit if price matters most, you want extra fiber, you like a thicker, creamier shake, and you're fine with erythritol and stevia.
You might prefer something else if you want a short ingredient list, you avoid erythritol, stevia or gums, or you want more protein per serving. If that's you, compare monk fruit-sweetened options like Optimal, or see our comparison of the best plant-based protein powders.
The bottom line
Orgain protein powder is a reasonable, affordable choice, and its lead result was lower than many plant proteins Consumer Reports tested, including ours. Whether it's "healthy" for you depends on what you want to avoid. It earns its creamy texture and low price with a longer ingredient list, two sweeteners and three gums. If those don't bother you, it's a solid pick. If they do, there are simpler options.
